After successful interview a 10% non refundable deposit is required to secure your place on the course. After that you can pay in full on the first day of the month your course begins or you can choose to pay a further 9 monthly payments on the first of each month. *Additional Costs (Unless otherwise stated to be applicable by Month 3) to support your future profession and training
When you are in practice you will be required to have public liability insurance and because your training is practical you will start seeing volunteers and clients from the outset of the course. We connect you with insurers who offer correct levels of insurance for students and generally the cost is £30-£40 for a year’s insurance.
It is a requirement that students join the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH) as a student member. The cost is £20 and your details will appear on their website register. This cost is offset subsequently when upgrading to full membership costing £40.00 rather than £60.00.
CPHT is a research oriented training provider and we have our own research programme, CORP. Students will become part of the research programme after Module 6 (i.e. after 6 months). In module 6 students will be instructed in installing the software onto a windows tablet/laptop. CPHT will provide students with access to the CORP research programme for just £1 for the first twelve months, after which it will need to be renewed annually. What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses practical, modern, and well researched strategies to help people make significant, positive changes in their lives in a relatively short period of time. Working with Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, the Solution Focused Hypnotherapist looks at what the client wants to achieve rather than on the problem(s) that prompted them to seek change.
The approach focuses on the present and future and not on the past. The Hypnotherapist asks the client to consider their preferred future, for instance, what would be better if the problem had improved? What would have changed? This enables the client’s possible solutions to become more apparent and worked towards. Hypnosis itself reduces anxiety and this is done very simply through relaxation and visualisation, allowing the client to focus on the positive aspects of their lives that encourages a shift in perspective.
Through working with the client, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help with many mental and physical health challenges and you can expect to have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of conditions; these are some of the most common conditions people will want help for
- Stress and Anxiety
- Low Confidence and Self-Esteem
- Sleep problems and insomnia
- Panic Attacks
- Obsessions (OCD)
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Weight Control
- Fear and Phobias
- Public Speaking
- Exam pressure
- Pain management
- Smoking Cessation
- Sport performance
- Disordered or fussy eating
- Sexual problems
- Chronic pain management
- Illness and palliative support
- Health anxiety
- Social phobia
- Relationship problems
- Skin problems
- Work performance
- Personal growth
What would it feel like to help someone deal with any one of these issues?
HPD and DSFH course overview
The philosophy of the teaching of David Newton is to constantly be looking for the best of the best and to stay abreast of current findings in neuroscience and therapy. The course structure is based predominantly on the work and experience of David Newton, with the addition of valuable writing and experience of other experienced practitioners and specialists. It is predominantly Solution Focused but you will learn the very best of NLP and CBT.
The study materials for the course have been prepared and selected by David Newton and his team and your complete course notes are accessible via the online student portal. Extra study materials will be provided in class. You will learn about hypnotherapy, in theory and plenty of practice, and how to be an effective psychotherapist. You learning is supported both in class and between training weekends; your lecturers are available for support and advice so that you can safely practice in your own time and will expect you to seek confirmation if you are ever unsure or would like to discuss a case.
No experience or prior qualification is necessary because the training programme is designed and written to give you a thorough and sound knowledge of the application of ethical clinical hypnosis and hypnotherapy, even if you have no previous experience of the field. However, we attract a wide variety of people from every background and profession including nurses, doctors and psychologists, who all recognise the powerful and practical application of solution focused hypnotherapy.
The tuition programme is modular and covers all that you need to start finding success very early on in training and you will be encouraged to see as many volunteer clients as you can during your training.

Methods of Hypnotherapy
As a student you will become familiar and confident in the two main methods of therapy used to aid clients
Suggestion Therapy; a traditional treatment used to help with straightforward problems such as smoking, pre-test nerves, nail-biting etc. It makes use of the mind’s heightened awareness and susceptibility to suggestions in order to make changes. You will learn on the course all you need to know about this therapy
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy; we look at what the client wants to achieve rather than on the problem(s) that prompted them to seek change. The approach focuses on the present and future and not on the past. The Hypnotherapist asks the client to consider their preferred future – what would be better if the problem had improved and what would have changed.
Based on the pioneering work of Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, solution focused hypnotherapy has its roots in solution focused brief therapy the hypnosis itself reduces anxiety simply through relaxation and visualisation, allowing the client to focus on the positive aspects of their lives that encourages a shift in perspective in the treatment room and beyond.
Standards of Teaching
When learning a new skill, the quality of the training you receive is very important, because that is the foundation on which your new career will rest. This means the content of the course, the integrity of the course and the standard of teaching must all be the ‘gold’ standard.
Your hypnotherapy training is delivered by lecturers who are successful, practising solution focused hypnotherapists in their own right, and receive training for a minimum of a year prior in order to lecture for CPHT.
Each school adheres to the strict guidelines from National Council of Hypnotherapy, the governing body and awarding body for your qualification, to have two lecturers per course, in order to maintain teaching standards.
In addition, you will have access to other senior professionals who will present lectures and talks, ensuring your expertise will be as well-rounded as possible.
When there are too many teachers, maintaining a guaranteed quality of tuition is as difficult for a hypnotherapy school as it is in the ‘standard’ educational system. On the other hand, having only one tutor or one who no longer practises, you may find you acquire a somewhat narrow view or outmoded view of the subject, hindering your future development.
Our training programme avoids these potential difficulties by maintaining a central knowledge base through David Newton, the acknowledged creator of solution focused hypnotherapy who has in his career over 40,000 client hours and has only recently stopped practising and teaching now that he is in his mid seventies. However, he continues to supervise tuition, lecturers and practicing hypnotherapists and drives advances in the courses, updating material if new and better research becomes available.
Your lecturers and guest lecturers are specially selected to present lectures and talks, ensuring that your expertise will be as well-rounded as possible.
Postgraduate Support and Progression
As more and younger people become hypnotherapists in order to keep you motivated and moving forward, you must be able to see a clear route to progress your career. At CPHT we believe the best way for someone to succeed and flourish is for them to be supported not just while they are training, but throughout their professional career. This is why we designed our CPD programme, support proper formal supervision and created the Advanced Hypnotherapy diploma, currently the highest externally verified qualification in the UK.
As a practising clinical hypnotherapist and graduate of CPHT you will be expected to remain in formal supervision, both to maintain your own standards of therapy, wellbeing and learning and because it is a mandatory professional requirement for members of National Council of Hypnotherapy (NCH) and the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapists (ASFH). Supervision is a highly valuable ongoing support for anyone working in the field of mental health and wellbeing and is part of your professional development within the profession, with the potential to move from registered to accredited status after three years in practice.
Whilst you are training however, your senior lecturers will act as your supervisors.
Once qualified you will have access to a fully and wide ranging Continuous Professional Development (CPD) program, delivered across multiple hubs across the UK. This covers all aspects of therapy, practice and business and CPHT are unique in offering such a comprehensive list of topics and courses in house. These are affordable, informative and enjoyable and specific CPDs make up the classroom learning element of the level 5 Advanced Hypnotherapy Diploma (AHD).
Examples of the on-going CPD programme would be:
- Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
- Fertility, Childbirth and Working with Children
- Neuroscience and Obesity
- Marketing for hypnotherapists
- GDPR explained
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Hypnosis and Disease

- General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC)
The General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC) and General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR) are the UK’s largest and most prominent organisations within the field of Hypnotherapy and together present an exemplary model for the simultaneous protection of the public and the provision of practitioner credibility and services. The GHR is a professional association and register of practising hypnotherapists, comprising in excess of 3,000 UK based individual practitioners, together with registered therapists in some 35 countries around the world.
When you successfully pass the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diplomac (HPD) you will be awarded a certificate of achievement by NCFE. The Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD) has been accredited by the NCFE as having measurable learning outcomes that have been benchmarked at Level 4 (using Ofqual’s Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) level descriptors). NCFE accreditation gives assurance that the content of the hypnotherapy training course is of a high standard and meets the rigorous requirements of a national awarding organisation. NCFE accreditation also gives formal recognition to our hypnotherapy training courses which result in the ‘award’ of a certificate of achievement. This award does not qualify you for a nationally recognised qualification. The NCFE is recognised as an Awarding Organisation by the qualification regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
- National Board for Modern Psychotherapy (NBMP)
The National Board for Modern Psychotherapy was primarily set up to increase the public’s awareness of Modern Psychotherapy and its associated benefits. Frequently asked Questions
Are there enough people who want hypnotherapy? With 1 in 4 adults in the UK suffering a mental health issue each year, 1 in 10 children and adolescents facing the same issues, long waiting lists and high failure rates for traditional therapy, if you only ever worked with anxiety and depression you would be busy. However, when you consider the scope of the work do and the rise in popularity of hypnotherapy, you can be as busy as you choose to be.
Does hypnotherapy really work? Yes! Solution focused hypnotherapy is based on the latest findings of neuroscience, the best of modern therapy and the beneficial aspects of trance. We have many hundreds of graduates, who have many testimonials and we run a research program to capture the success data of the work we do.
What qualifications do I need to get on the course? None. Your life experience, a desire to learn and a desire to help people are the most important skills you need. There is a level of academic work required, so please ask us if you are worried. Be aware that many of our most successful graduates had not been in formal education for decades and still more had never thought of themselves as either academic or successful.
Can I pay in instalments? Yes. We want to make this course as accessible as possible so we offer a payment plan at no extra cost to you. To secure your place on your chosen course you will pay a non-refundable 10% deposit and you can then spread the rest of the course cost over another 9 payments.
What if I change my mind about taking the course? In the unlikely event of youchoosing to leave the course you will be charged only for the months you attended. If you paid in full the remainder will be refunded. You will not be able to claim back any additional insurance or professional fees incurred.
What happens if I can’t attend a weekend? We have a nationwide network of schools and if you are ill or know when you join that you will not be able to come to your CPHT school one weekend, speak to your tutor who will help arrange a catch up weekend at another one of our schools.
What if something really big happens and I can’t complete the course? We know that sometimes life really does get in the way; illness, family challenges and personal loss can all mean we no longer have the capacity to continue our studies. In these circumstances you may defer your course until the next year and we invite you to re-do the weekends prior to leaving, with our compliments.
What qualifications and experience do my lecturers have? All CPHT lecturers are qualified and practising solution focused hypnotherapists. Senior lecturers will have a supervision qualification and either have or be working towards their level 5 AHD. Specialist lecturers will often have further specialist qualifications or experience in their chosen subject.
Is there any reading I can do before the course starts? There is an recommended reading list for the course, however, due to the extensive course notes not extra reading is required to pass your qualifications. We do not suggest any pre-reading, because your reading will be more valuable when it is in the context of the course.
Are there any higher qualifications I can go to take? You can go on to take the level 5 Advanced Hypnotherapy Diploma (AHD) and, after three years in practice, study for your qualification in supervision.
Do you offer weekday classes at this venue? Not at this time; most of our students find weekends are the time they have free, or in the case of those with children, the time when childcare is more readily available.
How will I find volunteer clients? Our students are often amazed at how easy it is to find willing volunteers on which to practice. In turn these willing volunteers recommend you to their friends and family and give you glowing testimonials, which you can share with potential new clients.
Are there exams or is it very academic? The HPD is a very practical course, without need for formal exams. Your competency is based on assessment of your classroom work, meeting key learning and achievement stages and by completing a client log, based on your client caseload. The academic part of your qualification is completed through a portfolio of, usually written, work. Although quite extensive, your knowledge and competency as a therapist is more important that how perfect your grammar and spelling is and you have several months to complete it.
How accessible is the building? Very. As a modern purpose build university building all areas are accessible.
What provision do you make for learning difficulties such as dyslexia? We work closely with everyone and have a number of solutions that we would happily talk you through.
Do you offer help with setting up a practice? No, but during the course offer lots of advice and experience, together with a dedicated specialist marketing module in month 4 that gives you plenty of time to gain your confidence before you graduate.
How do I apply? It’s very simple; fill in an application form and click send. We will contact you to arrange an informal interview, to assess your suitability for the course and to confirm the course will deliver the outcomes you want to achieve. On passing your interview we invite you to join the course and your 10% deposit secures your place.
Can I join now? Yes –
